Sheet Metal Workers Local 32 was chartered by the Sheet Metal Workers International Association in April 1984, as a result of a merger of two long established and proud Local unions, Local 223 in Miami and Local 130, West Palm Beach, both originally chartered in the 1920’s. This merger resulted in much stronger and more effective Local Union whose membership has grown to over 850 members.
During the 1920’s the South Florida area was an emerging destination. Henry Flagler’s railroad, road construction and land development brought many new residents and tourists to the area. Miami and Palm Beach soon became favorite destinations of the rich and famous looking to escape the harsh winters of the Northeast. Over the years, South Florida has exploded in growth and population, fueled by development, influxes of immigrants from Cuba, the Caribbean, both South and Central America as well as new residents from across the USA , giving the area and the Local Union a diverse and complex mixture of people and cultures.
South Florida has become the gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as a major international banking center, internationally known medical and bio-tech research center, and one of the most famous tourist destination’s in the entire world. From the mansions of Palm Beach to the glitz of South Beach and on to the Conch Republic in Key West South Florida is as unique as they come and where the Members of Local 32 call home.
